YARN

The YARN radio telescope was installed secretly near the strategically located Government controlled Waihopai SETI facility by a private organisation and activated in late 1998.

It was activated after it became apparent that international Government agencies had lost interest in the signals from outer space while at the same time steadfastly refusing to make their existence known to the public.

The YARN SETI radio telescope has received a great deal of raw signal data since that time, says Professor Grenfell.

YARN is short for Yellow band Active Radio Nuclide receiver.

SETI is an an acronym of Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence.
